Role overview

CHAI is looking for a highly motivated individual to work as an Epidemiologist, Senior Research Associate helping government programs make high-impact, resource-efficient decisions and build systems to eliminate malaria and NTDs in endemic countries of Africa, Central America and Southeast Asia. This position will be responsible for providing technical assistance on a wide range of analyzes for strategic program planning, surveillance monitoring and evaluation, case management practices and interventions. This role will lead or support the design, implementation and dissemination of operational research, perform statistical and geospatial analyzes to answer specific questions and understand disease patterns, and effectively communicate results to enable governments to use the results to make decisions. The base location for this role can be any CHAI country subject to Country Director approval.

  • Organize, cleanse, manage and integrate different types of datasets, including epidemiological, demographic, response and geospatial data;
  • Design and conduct statistical and spatial analyzes (descriptive analyses, regressions and other relevant methods) and interpret results to assess the effectiveness of current interventions, understand disease patterns and inform strategic and operational planning;
  • Lead or provide technical advice and thought-partnership on the implementation of operational research projects related to surveillance, intervention effectiveness and entomology, including question development and prioritization, formulation of research protocols, study design, sample size calculation, formulation and digitization of data collection tools, data validation and cleaning, biostatistical methodology and data visualization;
  • Provide technical guidance and thought-partnership on the design and regular implementation of monitoring and evaluation of CHAI and government programs, and analyze M&E indicators to inform progress;
  • Synthesize and disseminate results through high-quality scientific presentations, reports and publications;
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative working relationships with relevant CHAI team members, academic institutions and other partners;
  • Contextualize analytical work through the review and synthesis of gray and peer-reviewed literature;
  • Document and apply lessons learned, formulate training materials and conduct individual or group trainings as requested to promote the integration of data analysis and use into routine programmatic activities;
  • Any other task required.

Qualifications– Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology or related quantitative discipline;

  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience;
  • Proficiency in biostatistics with meticulous data management skills and solid experience in programming statistical and geospatial analyzes (R, SAS, STATA, ArcGIS, QGIS and/or other relevant software);
  • End-to-end experience in designing and performing analyzes for epidemiological analyzes or surveys, including sampling design, data collection, validation and cleaning, performing analyzes and dissemination ;
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet applications;
  • Experience programming and/or working with monitoring platforms (e.g. DHIS2), data collection tools (e.g. ODK) and/or data visualization applications (e.g. Tableau);
  • Enthusiasm for the effective application of research methods to solve complex global health problems, including the adoption of innovative quantitative and qualitative approaches using surveillance data;
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills and proficiency in writing reports and other concise written communications;
  • Ability to work independently in remote and unstructured environments and to adapt to new environments and challenges, and ability to collaborate, communicate and function within a multicultural team;
  • Strong work ethic, integrity, credibility and dedication to CHAI’s mission
  • Work experience in an international context and/or an entrepreneurial environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a sense of urgency and deadlines;
  • Willingness to travel a lot (up to 50%).


  • Knowledge of malaria, NTDs and/or other major global infectious disease issues;
  • Experience working and communicating with government officials and multilateral organizations;
